Google has gained a powerful ally on the mobile phone market. None less than electronics giant Samsung has announced that in the second quarter 2009 it will launch a Google mobile phone and it has joined the Android group led by Google. Android is a software package for mobile phones based on the Linux kernel, containing operating system and specially designed applications for the mobile market. Google’s new mobile operating system will be going up against already established platforms like Nokia’s Symbian, Apple’s Mac OS X and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. The great difference is that Android is Open Source and is completely free of charge.
The target market is smartphones and Samsung is already well on its way with the development of its first Android mobile phone. We would assume that the hardware bit is not Samsung’s biggest concern thanks to its experience from mobile phone development. Getting the software to cooperate with the phone is a different matter though, but since it recently hired 30 experts on Linux and Java there should be few problems they could not solve.
Samsung is going out strong with Google and its Android platform that looks to grown into something quite interesting. Until the launch there is a great chance we will see similar announcement from other mobile phone companies.
