Apple set a new standard for smartphones when it unveiled the iPhone. Even if iPhone is far from perfect was the first to use a touchscreen, it did bring it to the public eye big time and created a new product group. Phones like Apple iPhone are currently the most attractive among consumers, which of course leads to more companies developing similar phones, even companies that don’t even make phones usually. It looks like both Dell and Acer are about to launch their own smartphones.

That Acer has developed a phone of its own is perhaps not that much of a surprise since it bought mobile phone company E-Ten a while ago. It has now been announced that Acer will present its creation on February 16 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Specifics are hard to come by and whether Acer will leave a mark or not remains to be seen.

The story about Dell is yet to be confirmed though, but there are still reasons to take this seriously. Sources, famously “close to the company”, has told Wall Street Journal that Dell is planning two versions; one with a keyboard that folds out, like Sony Ericsson Xperia, and one where the interaction is handled solely with the touchscreen. As far as the rumor goes, Google will offer both Google Android and Windows mobile, but it is not certain if you will be able to combine any way you want between models.

More competition is always welcomed, but the question is if Acer and Dell can present anything new or just try to ride the same wave as Apple.
