Internet Explorer was on easy street for many years, but lately things have started to go downhill as Microsoft was punished for using its dominance in an unfair manner and now other browsers could break through. This was a few years back and Microsoft who still has the PC market in a firm hold is losing market shares at a steady rate. When the latest numbers was presented by Net Applications we saw how Microsoft has lost ground under 10 of the last 12 months.

This has resulted in the already low market share of 75.47% on January 1st, 2008, to drop to record low 67.55% in January 2009, says Net Applications.

At the same time the competition has been fighting for the new market shares where the most successful ones have been Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome. Firefox claims a record size share with 21.53% while Safari has climbed above the 8% mark with 8.29%, third biggest now is Google Chrome that has climbed to 1.12% since the launch in September 2008, which already makes it bigger than established and renowned browser Opera.
