NVIDIA is continuing down the green road and is expected to launch a green version of GeForce 9800GT. Just like little brother 9600GT the card will be suffixed “Green Edition” and be blessed with lower power consumption. This is acquired by lowering the GPU voltage and back down the frequencies a bit; the GPU now operates at 550MHz compared to the reference 600MHz, while the shader processors are reduced to 1375MHz, down from 1500MHz.
The GeForce 9800GT of today will be renamed GeForce GTS 240, perhaps with a slight retouch, but from what it seems Green Edition will keep its old name when it is launched in the middle of March. The price will be around $100 and intend to compete with ATI Radeon HD 4830.
While NVIDIA claims it is aiming to simply its naming, in practice things are sooner the opposite, but we can at least comfort ourselves with a slower dying environment!
