Earlier this week a video presentation of what was claimed to be the first OLED-based computer monitor from Samsung. The 23″ monitor offered a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and was thinner than regular LCD monitors. At the same time as we were positively surprised by the launch date in 2010, we were wondering how they had managed to solve the high manufacturing costs of the OLED technology. The answer wasn’t as unexpected as it was a disappointment.
Samsung’s claimed 23″ OLED monitor doesn’t have any OLED technology at all. The manufacturer had mislabeled its new monitor as an OLED model and the reason is the much OLED-like specifications Samsung’s LED BLU backlighting technology enables, with really good contrast ratios and slim format compared to regular CCFL backlit LCD monitors.
Samsung had the following to say about the unfortunate misunderstanding;
“It has recently come to our attention that the Samsung P2370L Monitor we have displayed at the Grand Designs Show uses LED BLU rather than OLED technology. Samsung would like to apologise for any confusion caused.
This error was caused by an internal miscommunication on our part and all press materials have since been amended to include these details.”
After this reality check we simply have to sit down and wait for the real first OLED monitors.
