Seagate is the world’s biggest manufacturer of harddrives, but at the same time it is the only actor on the same market that hasn’t made much of an effort to get into the new Solid State Drive market. Even if the company pointed out at a fairly early stage that it would hold off with its SSD venture, last we heard the first SSDs from Seagate would appear in 2009. Rumors are going around that Seagate has hit a speed bump with its SSD development and that mass production of its business geared SSDs can be delayed as late as 2011.
Seagate has run into problems with its development partner LSI that could mean it has to find a new partner for solving the problems and get a new SoC (System-on-a-Chip) circuit for its SSD units.
Even if Seagate would be ready with new drives next year, competitor STEC claims, as it also supplies businesses with SSD solutions, that it can take up to a year to complete a new product for mass production.
