Flash-based storage is all around us and the classic flash memory cards have come a long way. Except from holding more and more data, the transfer rates have increased even more so, and the popular Secure Digital (SD) standard can achieve speed up to 30MB/s. Toshiba has now presented the next generation SD memory that will offer speeds up to 60MB/s.

Toshiba’s new generation of SD memory will launch in two families, as regular FAT32 formated cards with 32GB and 16GB storage capacity. These will be so called SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memories.

It will also announce a new family of SDXC memories (Secure Digital Xtreme Capacity) that will offer up to 64GB of storage with the exFAT file system. The SDXC standard has much higher goals though.

The SDXC card is the next-generation standard defined by the SD Association in January 2009. The new standard applies to cards with capacities over 32GB and up to 2TB, compared to the SDHC standard, which applies to cards with capacities over 2GB and up to 32GB.

The new memory cards are expected to appear in 2010 and expect from the 60MB/s read speed they offer write speeds up to 35MB/s.
