Toshiba had to throw in the towel in the battle of the next generation optical format. Toshiba was one of the leading forces behind the HD DVD that fought against Blu-ray to win over the buyers. In the end it was Sony that was victorious with the Blu-ray format and Toshiba decided to stop production and development of HD DVD. It has taken some time, but Toshiba has launched its first Blu-ray players.
Even if the HD DVD format is more or less dead there is plenty of material out there and if anyone would offer HD DVD compatibility we would have guessed Toshiba, but that is not the case as Toshiba BDX2000 lacks any kind of HD DVD support.
The player is a mid-range model with Blu-ray disc profile 2.0 support and offers no extravagant features beside the full support for playing back Blu-ray movies. The player is estimated around $250 when it arrives in December.
