ASUS is a relatively small company when it comes to notebooks. All is relative of course and ASUS have been gaining market shares for a number of years, but the big dragons, Dell, HP and Acer, are still much larger. SquareTrade has now presented a study of the reliability of notebooks and its ASUS topping the list along with Toshiba.

Only 10 percent of the sold ASUS notebooks break in the first two years, which is significantly better than HP who ended up last with 16 percent.

Also Acer, Lenovo and Gateway are among the losers with numbers around 13-15 percent. Not surprisingly the breakdowns increase a lot when the numbers are projected over three years, but the individual order of the companies remains the same.

SquareTrade delivers a pretty clear conclusion, based on a long known and well establish fact; you get what you pay for. Cheap netbooks break down a lot more often, while more expensive premium models last longer.

It’s worth mentioning that ASUS, who came out on top, is pondering acquiring Toshiba, who came in second. With these numbers in mind it looks like a merger with high potential.
