In Q1 next year we will for the first see how DDR3 memory modules will become the most popular memory type. According to iSuppli sales of DDR3 memories with 1Gb memory chips will make out 46% of all shipped memory modules, a big increase from the 8% it had in Q1 2009. In Q2 more than 50% of all sold modules with 1Gb chip will be using DDR3 technology.

By the end of 2010 the share is expected to grow to 71% for DDR3 memory modules, all as Intel moves out new platforms supporting the latest memory technology.

While the availability of DDR3 modules increase prices go down and after all major memory manufacturers have entered the DDR3 market prices are starting to approach those of the older DDR2 technology, which has actually become more expensive lately.
