Even if there already are external Blu-ray burners on the market they have had some problems with the external transfer rates. Blu-ray burners capable of 8x speed or higher can’t reach their potential with USB 2.0. Manufacturer Buffalo has now announced the market first USB 3.0 Blu-ray burner and with this new interface it should have no problem living up to its potential of 12x writing, as long as you have a USB 3.0 port to spare.

Buffalo BR-X1216U3 will be shipping in Japan in December. It will cost 39,100 Yen, which is roughly $450, and for that kind of money you get BD-R SL/DL burning at 12x speed. Single-layer DVDs can be written at 16x speed, but there is also support for DVD-RAM and regular CDs.
