AMD’s current platform is called Dragon and is built around the Phenom II processors, ATI Radeon HD 4000 graphics card and AMD 790GX chipset. The next platform from AMD will be called Leo and the graphics cards are already here, ATI Radeon HD 5000 series, and we have already reported on the coming processors for the platform. AMD’s first hexa-core Phenom II processor, dubbed Thuban, will be the brain of the Leo platform. The AMD 890FX chipset has now made an appearance.
MSI 890FX-GD70 is as far as we know the first motherboard based on the AMD 890FX chipset caught on camera and the motherboard is of course a board for the enthusiasts with numerous cool functions.
The motherboard sports 5 phase digital DrMOS power supply and no less than 6 (!) PCIe x16 slots for some crazy CrossFireX configurations. To make things even better we have 6 SATA 6Gbps ports and USB 3.0 support. The overclocking functions include switches for the voltages.
We don’t know for certain exactly when the 890FX chipset will be officially unveiled, but AMD’s Thuban CPU is expected to launch in Q2 2010, which will complete the Leo platform.
