Marvell is the only manufacturer to release a controller chip for the SATA 6Gb/s interface. It has now presented its first solid state prototype using its own SSD controller supporting the new interface. Marvell will not be selling any SSDs but it looks to have great plans for its SSD controller. Something that could match its Marvell SATA 6Gbps circuit well. The first tests at least show promising read performance.
PC Perspective have tested Marvell’s SSD prototype made with ROM circuits (Read Only Memory), which means they could only test the read speed. This prototype could achieve maximal read speeds of 351.2MB/s and a sustained read speed of 314.5MB/s, which is even higher than Intel’s 160GB G2 SSD that was clocked at 246.7MB/s.
Marvell supplies both SATA 6Gb/s chip and SSD controller
The benchmarks are on par with those we saw from Micron with a more complete design and we of course look forward to the first SATA 6Gbps SSD drives that are slated for launch early next year.
