WD has a broad selection of mechanical drives and before the Solid State technology launched its family of Raptors was king of the hill. But today you need more than a 10,000 RPM engine to keep up with SSDs and we have seen plenty of reviews were WD’s VelociRaptor series have a hard time measuring up.
WD doesn’t quite agree though as it is said to continue working on its family of VelociRaptors and it is currently developing the fifth generation of Raptors.
The news include twice the storage capacity, up to 600GB, with two platters, and more cache. The base is the same and just like previous models the fifth generation will use a 10,000 RPM engine.
It hopes to attract those who are looking for a compromise between performance and storage capacity. But to be completely honest we have a hard time imagining a big market right now, even if we wait to pass any final judgment until we have the new markets in our hands.
