Intel’s LGA 1366 platform is not the most talked about right now since the new mid-range LGA 1156 platform just arrived. Within the near future this will change though, as Intel is preparing to launch its first hexa-core CPU and when Gulftown, Core i7 980X, is ready to launch, ASUS will be be too. During CES it showed the coming ASUS Rampage III Extreme motherboard, which is just as extreme as Intel’s coming six-core processor.

ASUS Rampage III Extreme is designed for enthusiasts and overclockers, sporting four PCI Express x16 slots, due to NVIDIA’s NF200 chip. It also brings SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0, and 24GB DDR3 memory support through six memory slots.

Just like Maximus III Extreme, the motherboard supports ROG Connect, a technology that allows the user to overclock the system via Bluetooth, e.g. from a mobile phone. You will also be able to power on and power off the computer, or simply monitor temperatures and such, which sounds quite neat to be honest.

ASUS have also given the board a new power supply for even better current and stable voltages. The voltages can be read directly through the measuring spots on the board and the cooling is low-profile, which should ease heatsink installations.

The price should land somewhere around $300 and we expected to see the board in stores around the same time Intel announces Core i7 980X.
