Plextor was a leading actor in optical storage at the start of the century, but lately it has had a hard time standing out. It looks like the company is about to broaden its horizon and launch its own series of Solid State Drives. Plextor has turned to Marvell for the SSD controller and with 64MB cache and up to 128GB MLC NAND flash memory Plextor’s newcomer will be somewhat of an entry level product.
Plextor is planning 2.5″ drives with 64GB or 128GB capacity and with SATA 3.0GB/s interface the speeds of the drive are limited to meager 110MB/s read speed and 65MB/s write speed.
It’s going to be interesting to see how big this SSD venture of Plextor will be, and if it will expand the assortment to include products for more demanding users and enthusiasts.
