Both AMD and NVIDIA showed some great 3D presentations during CES in Las Vegas. Not 3D graphics but stereoscopic 3D for everything from video to games. The companies demonstrated the new Blu-ray 3D format and rumors are going around that AMD have already come a long way with implementing support for the format. It looks like the first Catalyst drivers this year, Catalyst 10.1 will bring it by the end of January.
The new Catalyst drivers will ship with an updated Direct3D driver that will enable third-party developers to use 3D support with 120Hz displays. There will also be support for Bit Cauldron’s 3D glasses, which uses a RF-based shutter glass technology.
Exactly how well AMD’s stereoscopic 3D technology works and how it matches up to NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology we don’t know. But AMD doesn’t want to wait with its 3D venture, while NVIDIA continues to show its Eyefinity-like multi-monitor support together with Fermi. The graphics card makers are following each other footsteps and we can only hope this brings more and better features for us, the end users.
