Intel is working on eliminating the last few bugs from its hexa-core Westmere processors. Except from the well known enthusiast processor Gulftown, Core i7 980X, the processor giant has a number of Xeon models in the making. One of these is the Westmere-EP Xeon X5680 that has found its way into the hands of overclocker JCornell.
The processor operates at 3.33GHz from factory but some quick overclocking pushed it to 4.5GHz with simple air cooling. The same treatment moved Intel’s coming Xeon W3680 CPU to over 4GHz from the stock frequency 3.33GHz. Both of the new Xeon processors will launch in the March/April time frame and is based on the Westmere-EP architecture.
The news about Intel’s Westmere-EP architecture is that it supports multiple processors linked together. This makes them hot candidates for EVGA’s dual-CPU motherboard that are expected to appear in the coming weeks. This would create a quite neat system capable of handling 24 simultaneous threads.
