När Google avslöjade att man jobbade på ett nytt operativsystem för PC-marknaden kallat Chrome OS skapade det en hel del vilda diskussioner och en mer omfattande sammanfattning om det kommande operativsystemet går att hitta i vår artikel. Även om Google har för vana att göra succé är det ingen liten aktör man ställs emot när man på allvar ger sig in på operativsystemsmarknaden. Microsoft har varit totalt dominanta de senaste årtioendena och nu turas företagets grundare, Bill Gates, och dess nuvarande vd, Steve Ballmer, om att nedvärdera Googles nytillskott.
Bill Gates passade på att ge ett par kängor till Google och deras hemlighetsmakeri i en intervju med Cnet där han bland annat jämför Chrome OS med alla andra Linux-distributioner som finns världen över.
Well, just to do the second part very succinctly, there’s many, many forms of Linux operating systems out there, and packaged in different ways, and booted in different ways. So I don’t know anything in particular about what Google is doing. But, in some ways I’m surprised people are acting like there’s something new. I mean, you’ve got Android running on Netbooks; it’s got a browser in it. In any case, you should make them be concrete about what they’re doing. It is kind of a typical thing. When Google is doing anything it gets this–the more vague they are, the more interesting it is. – Bill Gates
Samtidigt som både Bill Gates och Steve Ballmer vill poängtera att Google nu har två operativsystem, Android och Chrome OS, som riktar sig mot snarlika marknaden. Något som Microsoft tidigare testat med Windows NT, vilket inte slutade i succé.
Samtidigt pekade Ballmer på att PC-användare till 50-procent av tiden gör något annat än använder sig av en webbläsare, vilket betyder att Microsoft inte behöver ett nytt operativsystem för att kontra Chrome OS.
