Hitachi has a whole bunch of cool displays in development. We have now seen the latest creation; a 6.6″ transmissive IPS touchscreen with a seldom seen pixel density. Thanks to 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution the monitor has 302 ppi, almost on par with Apple’s Retina with 326 ppi.
Pixels Per Inch is often more important than the actual resolution where it is all about creating an illusion that every drawn object has perfect edges without jaggies. For the human eye the line goes somewhere at 300 ppi, which should mean that the different between Apple’s Retina display and Hitachi’s 6.6″ prototype is mainly academic. Even if the detection is directly affected by the distance to the screen.

It get’s even more interesting when compared to Samsung Galaxy Tab that recently launched sporting 7″ touchscreen with 1024×600 pixel resolution, which is 169 ppi. Even worse when we compare to a standard netbook with the same resolution as Galaxy Tab but 10″ panel, which is 118 ppi for even worse sharpness. Among desktop monitors we find the highest pixel densities with the new 27″ panels with 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution for 108 ppi, but these are enjoyed at a much longer distance than mobile screen.
The Hitachi display also brings 800:1 contrast ratio and 400 cd/m2 brightness.
We hope to see higher pixel densities overall, both among mobile and desktop displays, where all too many get stuck at 1080p resolution. Hitachi hasn’t revealed any details on when the monitor will be released, but we of course hope to see some interesting solutions in the near future.
