There are rumors of problems with the new Cayman series of graphics cards from AMD. During Financial Analyst Day AMD revealed that its Radeon HD 6990 that was developed under the code name “Antilles” sporting dual Cayman circuits will be postponed till next year.
AMD published a new roadmap for its Radeon family where the flagship with dual chips was moved from the original launch in December 2010 to Q1 2011. Exactly when in Q1 is uncertain, but it is clear there has been a delay of several weeks.
AMD will launch the first Cayman-based graphics cards by the end of the year. The in form of Radeon HD 6970 and Radeon HD 6950. Both of these have a launch date set in late November, but new rumors are saying that AMD have problems with the yield at TSMC – deja vú – which could push the cards back to the following month and then risking a launch with poor availability.
What we know today is that NVIDIA has put the bar up high with the launch of GeForce GTX 580 and if AMD is to hang on on the market for single-GPU circuits Radeon HD 6970 will have to be something extraordinary..
