Harddrive maker Seagate has been the biggest for many years and after 31 years on the storage market it announced it has sold more than 1.5 billion harddrives. Seagate lost its lead in 2010 to Western Digital that is currently selling more drives, but all in all Seagate still has a big lead.
WD recently reported that after 41 years in storage the company had shipped 1 billion drives and even if it has actually surpassed Seagate in slaes, Seagate had many good years up to now.
With current sales volumes it estimates to sell around 500 million harddrive in two years and then reach the next milestone, 2 billion sold drives.
At this rate, the 2 Billion drives milestone will happen in the next 2 years, meaning what previously took 29 years to reach will only take 5 years. Put that into a different perspective… Facebook founded in 2004 reached 500M users in 2010…6 years.
