Western Digital continues to focus on performance HDDs

SSD is coming down in price and many can afford a smaller drive for the operating system, but Western Digital continues with its Velociraptor series and has released two new models. VelociRaptor is the line for enthusiasts and comes with higher performance, but also a higher price.

Last year Western Digital introduced its fifth generation Velociraptor with SATA 6 Gb/s and 32MB cache at 450 GB and 600 GB capacity. The new 150 GB and 300 GB models had to settle for the older SATA 3 Gb/s standard and 16 MB cache.

The two smaller models have now been refreshed, with SATA 6 Gb/s and 32 MB cache. It is unclear if we will see any higher performance figues with these changes, but they will cost slightly more.

We question whether it is worth buying a more expensive mechanical performance drive, or if it is perhaps better to just get a SSD for the same amount of money and a larger mechanical drive for storage?
