Many probably remember the video from YouTube where a company claimed it would revolutionize the gaming industry. It called it“Unlimited Cloud-point Data”, which would be capable to render an unlimited number of particles in games and the company, Euclideon, have released a new video and says it is almost finished.

The new technology doesn’t use polygon and will sweep the market, says Euclideon. Instead it uses dots, or small particles. Last year it showed an impressive demonstration that sounded almost too good to be true, but the technology has now been acquired by an Australian company called Euclideon that will be ready to ship its SDK (Software Developers Kit) to game developers soon.

The new video from Unlimited Detail, now Euclideon.

It all sounds very impressive, almost too impressive. The gaming industry has been able to increase the number of polygons in games with ~25% annually according to Euclideon, while its technology will increase polygons, or “points” and thus the details 100,000 fold. You will not need any special hardware, but the demo is rendered in realtime, in software.

The company has a polygon converter that will be able to convert material from 3DS Max, Maya and the other 3D programs to Cloud-Point Data, which will make it easier for artists behind the environment and the graphics to start using the new technology.

If all falls into place we are dealing with a revolution in gaming and photo realism in our computers in the near future, but up until it has released more than just YouTube videos it is hard to draw anything serious from this. It’s worth noticing that it hasn’t shown any animations, which it will do, but we will have to be patient.

Also John Carmack is skeptic against the technology and in a Twitter entry he tells Euclideon that there is no chance to get games on current systems (consoles) since the game development with the technology will be a challenge with its new technology.
