When we thought screens with 300 pixel density was impressive Toshiba comes out of left field and shows a new super high resolution 6.1″ panel with 498 PPI. Toshiba’s latest creation boasts a resolution at 2560 x 1600 pixels and sets a new bar for what counts as high pixel density.

Hitachi earlier announced a 4.5″ screen with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution for smartphones and even if it has an impressive pixel density at 329 PPI it is nothing compared to the latest innvation from Toshiba. Why Toshiba has used a 6.1″ format the story doesn’t say, but most likely it is to be able to show an impressive PPI with a new panel manufacturing technology. Just the fact it can squeeze in 2560 x 1600 pixels in such a small panel promises good for future tablets where the sizes are more between 7 to 10″.

Toshiba says that the new LCD panel, that uses the same Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LPTS) found in the 4.5″ display, will present “photorealistic images” with pixels too small for the human eye. Toshiba has made a comparison of how a pixel density of nearly 500 PPI makes it hard to tell a difference between pixels even though zoomed in. In other words, you should not be able to tell during everyday use.

Toshiba is not the first panel manufacturer that talks of resolutions at 2560 x 1600 pixels in smaller displays. Samsung has a 10″ model with the same resolution in development and Apple is hunting panels before the development before the development of the third generation iPad tablet.

Toshiba’s LCD panel will comes with contrast ratios at 1000:1 and viewing angles at 176 degrees and capacity of show 16.7 million colors. We hopes it the high resolution display technology to the market shortly and at the top of the list is the previously announced 4.5″ 720p screen from Hitachi, and a bigger version of the just revealed 6.1″ panel.
