Intel has been selling processors with unlocked multipliers for overclocking for some time now, but these models have not been overed by any special warranty, which also applies to AMD. Intel is now going to offer a special overclocking warranty – at a price.

Intel and AMD both offers unlocked processors for enthusiasts that enjoy overclocking, but the processor warranty doesn’t cover overclocking. None of the two is very keen on answering questions about processors breaking during overclocking, and there is no real way of checking if the processor broke because of overclocking.

Beside care, cooling is essential during overclocking

Either way Intel has been frequently asked if the warranty covers overclocking. It has now decided to offer warranty for unlocked processors, at a price that is fairly reasonable relative to the price of the processor. The warranty is called Performance Tuning Protection Plan, and costs $20 – $35 depending on the model.

  • Intel Core i5-2500K (LGA1155) – $20
  • Intel Core i7-2600K (LGA1155) – $25
  • Intel Core i7-2700K (LGA1155) – $25
  • Intel Core i7-3930K (LGA2011) – $35
  • Intel Core i7-3960X (LGA2011) – $35

The warranty has to be bought during the first year, and runs for three years after that and covers the exchange of one processor. Intel says it still doesn’t endorse overclocking, but sees it as a complement to its regular warranty. This extra service will be available during a six months test period, and will continue thereafter if successful. For more information on the warranty, rules and general information click here.
