ASUS preps Dragon version of HD 7850 with higher frequencies

ASUS looks to braoden its lineup of Radeon HD 7800-based graphics cards. According to sources the company is working on a new model; ASUS Dragon HD7850 DirectCu II, that uses a new cooler and bigger power supply to help with the higher frequencies.

Taiwanese component maker ASUS have several product families among its graphics cards and now another seems to be coming. Pictures and information about ASUS Radeon HD 7850 Dragon Edition have appeared online and the common nominator is a focus on more powerful components and performance, over the reference products.

ASUS Dragon HD7850-DC2O-2GD5 is the complete name of the graphics card that will use a new PCB with a more powerful power supply, 6+3 phases Digi+ for GPU and memory. The power is supplied through two 6-pin power connectors. The GPU will be operating at a clock frequency of 910 MHz, which is a boost from the stock 870 MHz. While the 2GB GDDR5 memory has been lifted from 4,840 MHz to 5,000 MHz.

As the name reveals the cooler comes from the DirectCu II series and has performed well in the lab. With dual fans, copper heatpipes and a big heatsink there is plenty of cooling capacity. The design is a bit different from previous cards DirectCu II, among others it has a full cover backplate.
