Asus has wide selection of PC monitors and several of these target gamers with demands on quick and smooth motions. The company has now announced Asus VG278HE, which takes this one step further with an update frequency of 144 Hertz.
While we are still waiting for panels with 120 Hz to become more common, Asus has raised the bar with its latest gaming monitor VG278HE. By raising the update frequency with 24 hertz it can produce 24 more frames per second over traditional 120 hertz monitors. Asus claims this will result in an superior experience in both 2D and 3D applications.
Asus VG278HE uses a 27″ TN-based panel with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, and 2 ms (g2g) response time. The screen comes with two dual-link DVI, one HDMI and one D-Sub input. Asus has also baked in two speakers at 3 watt each, and support for Nvidia 3D Vision 2. The stand is adjustable in height and tilts for optimal gaming sessions.
Asus has not released any prices for VG278HE, but should arrive in stores very soon.
Whether the extra 24 Hz makes a difference or not we don’t know. The jump from 60 Hz to 120 Hz is very noticeable, and the question is if this had not been more interesting with an IPS panel.
This can also be beneficial for 3D movies.
At 144Hz, you get 72Hz per eye, or 3 refreshes of a 24Hz movie.
With just exactly 120Hz, you can’t divide a single pair of movie frames equally between the eyes in 1/24th of a second, because 1/24 of 120 is 5, which is an odd number – one eye could get 2 refreshes and the other eye could get 3 refreshes.
