Finally, a few additional mainboard chipsets for Intel’s new P4 CPUs have found their way out on the consumer market. So far, only the chipsets manufactured by Intel have been available in large volumes for those wanting to hop on the 800 MHz FSB band wagon. Now it seems as a SiS board has made it to the market as wall, aiming for the new P4 segment.
At Anandtech.com, they have tested a Gigabyte 8S655FX Ultra; a mainboard based on the SiS 655FX chipset and that fully supports Intel’s P4 with 800 MHz FSB.
The mainboard is one of the most feature-rich available according to the guys at Anandtech, and that’s saying a great deal! It’s priced somewhere around 40% lower than its 875P based competitors, not exactly making matters worse.
The mainboard has truly acceptable performance despite it’s new and untested drivers and only seems to have one weakness: overclocking.
Overall, SiS and Gigabyte seem to be on to something there, and let’s just hope that we will see the Gigabyte 8S655FX Ultra in stores shortly.
