ASUS CT-479: Pentium M on your Socket 478 platform

Intel’s very efficient Pentium M-processor has during the last year taken the step over from the laptopsmarket to the desktop one. The mainboards available on the desktopmarket with Pentium Ms Socket 479 are very few and at the same time the chipset used, i855GME, is a bit old.

This has been taken care of by componentmanufacturer ASUS that has launched a Socket 479-to-478-adapter. This adapter makes it possible to install a Pentium M processor on a Socket 478-mainboard.
In its originaldesign the adapter is only verified to work with ASUS’ own Socket 478-mainbords, P4P800 SE and P4P800-VM. Both uses the i865-chipset from Intel and supports among others dual memory channels with DDR400-speeds, i855GME supports only DDR333 in one channel.
If the adapter won’t lead to any bigger losses in performance this might lead to a really nice increase in performance using a Pentium M-processor on one of these boards.

We look forward to tests of the ASUS CT-479-adapter and really hope that Pentium M becomes a more common sight on the desktopmarket.
