AMD has announced to its partners that they will move on to the newer Socket 939-platform. The first platform for A64, Socket 754, will get less space on the market. So far there is no information on what will happen with the low cost processor “Sempron” that has been the sole processor on the Socket 754-platform for some time now. Socket 939 is a better platform for AMD’s Athlon 64-series in many ways but the final cut was probably  64 X2, AMD’s dual-core processor, that will only be supported by Socket 939.
