Athlon 64 X2 4200+ overclocking test

Athlon 64 X2 4200+ is the minor in AMD’s dual-core series for the desktop market. The processor costs about $600 and is to be honest not a very cheap alternative. But compared to its bigger brother in the  X2-series, 4800+, it’s a real bargain. The latter is impossible to find below the $1000 mark. But shou8ldn’t it be possible to get similar performance with a 4200+ just by overclocking? In an article at Anandtech they’ve done some tests with a 4200+ and overclocked with pretty conventional methods such as air cooling and just increasing the voltage.

The results are quite impressive considering this is a completly new model. They’ve managed to squeeze their processor from 2.2GHz to 2.7GHz completly stable, and with only using air cooling. Although the 4200+ only has half the L2-cache that its bigger brother does 4800+, but it only works at 2.4GHz stock. There is a lot of potential with AMD’s X2-series and we are eagerly awaiting some cheaper versions such as the 3000+/3200+ when AMD transferred to Socket 939.
