Up here in the north it is still pretty pretty rare to find a TV with genuine HDTV-support but in other parts of the world you need a little more than just HDTV to get some attention. Haier Corp and Freescale Semiconductor has really managed to grab some attention when they displayed an HDTV that uses the UWB-technology (Ultra-Wideband) to transfer the HDTV-signals wireless from a digital mediaserver. The wireless system with both TV and mediaserver will be sold by Haier, one of China’s largest suppliers of consumer electronics as a whole package. “Freescale’s UWB technology is capable of transferring multiple high-definition (HD) or MPEG2 movie streams — up to 110Mbps — at distances of up to 20 meters, enabling significant freedom in the placement of home theater equipment. Current wireless video solutions do not have the bandwidth to accommodate HD or MPEG2 streams, which require a minimum of 20Mbps each. Indeed, current WiFi solutions are only capable of broadcasting standard-definition (SD) video streams at 5-7Mbps.” Haier will launch its system during the fourth quarter in China and it is expected to launch UWB-capable products in USA during 2006. The 37″ UWB-capable HDTV is an LCD-screen with a resolution at 1080i. The UWB-antenna has been integrated into the TV and isn’t visible to the naked eye. Only thing missing is a wireless power supply and we will be rid of all the cables. Source: NE Asia
