Small preview imageNEC is one of the manufacturers that has had big successes with super-computers. They were for long at the top at the Top500-list with its Earth Simulator but has been pinned down to fourth. This we’re not talking about a Top500 candidate but NEC has instead announced a deskside super computer. That is a computer to have next to your desk and not the size of warehouse as many other super-computers. NEC HPC Server SX-8i is a vector based super-computer with a performance of 16GFLOPS. The whole system measures only 45x70x70cm.

“Equipped with the world’s smallest single-chip vector processor, the same as the one used in the SX-8 machine, the SX-8i can mount up to 32GB DRAM and delivers a thruput of 64GB/sec between the processor and memory, ensuring highly efficient use for advanced scientific and computing applications. The SX-8i supports a built-in hard drive capacity of 146GB.”

The system will cost, in its most basic appearance, $109 000 and will be released in February 2006. If you feel the need for a small super-computer and have a hundred grand to spare yu can always purchase one of the 300 system NEC is planning on selling the coming three years.
