Small preview imageR520 and G70 are the two “big” graphic card architectures of today. The first is the foundation of ATi’s new flagship Radeon X1800 XT and the latter is used with nVidiaäs GeForce 7800-series. The two architectures are very different even if the performance is relatively equal if we take alook at the two top models. ATi has went for higher frequencies and less pipelines, while nVidia has done the opposite. Relatively low frequnecies and more pixel pipelines is the recipe for the G70-architecture. But what happends if you run the architectures at the same frequency and the same number of pipelines?

That is precisely what Driverheaven as they have tried to compare the two during equal circumstances. The results are actually quite interesting, especially as ATi claims that R520 is designed to be as efficient as possible. Which doesn’t really show with Driverheaven’s tests. Even if this comparison is not all that interesting as ATi and nVidia has chosen different paths when designing its architectures it is quite interesting to see how they perform during equal circumstances. A really interesting subject as it may very show what we are to expect in the future.
