ATi recently released a new set of drivers for its Radeon-graphic cards which among others will fix compatibility issues with Serious Sam 2 and Quake 4. This is only the beginning though, Catalyst 5.10a is namely the first set of drivers with ATi’s memory controller bandwidth optimiztions we’ve earlier reported about. The optimiztions are for the programmable memory controller that the Radeon X1000-series hasand won’t affect the performance of the X8xx-series as ar as we know. Earlier we’ve seen that ATi’s optimizations can result in up to 35% better performance with such games as Doom3 and similar. When we asked ATi about the new drivers we got the following responce. “Memory mapping tuning for better OGL performance. Even 50 percent in some situations” In other terms there is a lot of performance to collect for those who play a lot of OpenGL-games with their e.g. Radeon X1800 XL. We are currently working on our massive performance comparison of the X1000-series and will of course complete our already performed tests with more tests with ATi’s new drivers. Hope fully this will end ATi’s reign of OpenGL-problems.
