OCZ XTC – More efficient heat spreaders

OCZ XTC is the name of OCZ’s new heat spreader design where XTC is short for Xtreme Thermal Convection. The heat spreader is as most of you probably know the name of the metal cooling device many memory modules are equipped with and in general they all pretty much look alike. It seems though as OCZ has reconsidered and changed this with its new XTC heat spreaders as they both look different and are suppose to be much more efficient than today’s spreaders. The heat spreader uses a wax-like design which means that it doesn’t cover the memories 100% but at the same time doesn’t risk enclosing any hot air between the spreader and the memory module.




“The unique design used in the XTC heatspreaders optimizes the thermal management of memory modules by promoting greater airflow by means of micro-convection throughout what is usually the dead air space inside conventional heatspreader designs. In this manner, build-up of heat is avoided and thermal dissipation of the memory components is offloaded more efficiently through the honeycomb design. At the same time, mechanical stability is maintained.”



The new spreaders are already used with two of OCZ’s new memory modules, OCZ PC-3200 Gold GX and OCZ PC-3500 Gold GX. If the new XTC heat spreaders are noticeably better than today’s version is impossible to say until we’ve seen any tests confirming OCZ’s statements.
