IBM PowerPC 970MP has made its first apperance in Apple’s new Power Mac G5-series where the CPU with its dual cores has abled Apple to launch their first Mac with four physical cores. Apple has before the introduction of Intel CPU’s spoken a lot about performance per Watt, and therefore it was no long-term guess that IBM as well has gone for power saving functions in hope to get Apple to use their new dual-core CPU before switching to Intel next year. At Znet they have written a litte about PowerPC 970MP and what IBM has done to optimize the power consumption on this particular CPU. Info of an interesting function, as that the processor is able to shut down one of the two cores completely, is included in the article.
