Sun Microsystems has launched a new server processor and just as expected it was its UltraSparc T1 processor which has become ready for use. We have earlier reported about Niagara, which is the processor’s manufacturing name and the fact is that the processor has eight processor cores on the same chip. Despite that Niagara is considerably more power effective than most other extreme server processors. The processor will only consume about 70W whch can be compared to the 150W to 200W most other similar server processors consumes. With its capacity it can handle 32 threads (!) (four threads per core) Sun claims to have a five year advantage on IBM’s PowerPC and Intel’s Xeon. Source: Yahoo
