USB can be used for more than connecting units such as printers, memories or similar. You can actually use the USB interface more or less as a regular network. Since USB2.0 is common today with its good transfer speed at 480Mbps the performance is hardly a problem either. Regular Ethernet maxes out at 100Mbps. At Hardware Secrets they’ve published an article about how you can connect two computers in various ways through the USB interface. Not only regular file sharing but also Internet connection sharing and similar.
