NVIDIAs popular chipset nForce seems to have some compatibility problems with harddrives from the manufacturer Maxtor. It is the SATA versions of Maxtor DiamondMax 9 and 10 which with their early firmwares perform very poorly with certain nForce 4 based motherboard. Some of the affected motherboards are the ASUS A8N series, DFI Lan Party NF4 and some MSI based nForce 4 motherboards. The compatibililty problems which involve the integrated SATA controller which result in corrupt data, lock ups and that the harddrive simply disappear from the system. This can easily be solved with a firmware update, which however Maxtor doesn’t seem to be all that interested in making available. Source: NGOHQ
