Small preview imageIntel has the last couple of months made a complete u-turn from betting on high frequencies and thus high power consumption to going for performance per watt instead. Important steps in Intel’s plans are the development of new manufacturing processes and as you perhaps know it is about to launch several new processors based on 65nm technology the coming months. According to information posted at THG Intel is working on no less than 21 different processors based on 65nm and also 45nm technology today. 17 (!) of them are to be launched between 2006 and 2008. Except for the Itanium series all of Intel’s new mobile, server and desktop processors will be based on the company’s new processor architecture which has its roots in the mobile chip Pentium M.

It is going 110% for processors with several cores and not just dual core but will also launch models with four and eight cores the coming years.

“Virtually all new Intel chips released between 2006 and 2008 will be based on mobile processor technology and will include the already taped out 65 nm quad-core desktop processor “Kentsfield” and the 45 nm eight-core “Yorkfield” chip.”
