Blu-ray and HD DVD are both just about to get going and CES is of course a good way to show the people what’s coming up, even though the fair often gives us hints of what’s still a few years away. As for Blu-ray’s participation in CES, it started with TDK showing 4-layer discs, 100GB in other words. More than three times as much as the largest HD DVD-discs. These discs will probably not be showing up in a while yet, sadly, but its surely nice to know that there is some potential. We’ve earlier been reporting about Pioneer’s plans on launching a Blu-ray unit already in this month, but now we also know that Panasonic will join, but not until March.
Toshiba has chosen to show their HD DVD-players at the fair which of course shows in their stocks, but we still don’t know when it’s going to show up and how the production of media is going. Toshiba has clearly been inspired by Harman/Kardon it seems, but if it’s good or bad is up to you. Looking at the picture, the player is equipped with a 5.1-decoder, optic outputs, but also the good old S-Video and composite seems fully possible next to component. We assume that the piece painted in silver in the middle is where the HDMI-contact is about to end up, otherwise it start’s to look quite suspicious. Apart from that the player also packs an ethernet-unit, which should able it to be connected to the rest of the digital home.
