STI goes for 32nm

STI which consists out of Sony, Toshiba and IBM has together developed Cell which among others will be the core of Sony’s next generation game console Playstation 3. Cell is a multimedia processor with huge capacity, but has at the same time a much more complex structure than other processors. At the same time it took the oppurtunity to team up and improve the manufacturing process, first 90nm and within five years 65nm. They have now announced that they will the within the coming five years cut this by half this down to 32nm. Why they chose to skip 45nm they didn’t really say, but may very well be because of that Sony and Toshiba has already started to research on this area.
