Socket M2 is expected to be AMD’s first real universal platform for all processors, from the low end to the high end. Socket M2 uses a new socket with 940 pins but the Socket M2 processores are not compatible with AMD’s workstation platform Socket 940. The biggest news with Socket M2 is without a doubt the support for DDR2, which will be the first time in years that AMD upgrade the memory technology used. Now VR-Zone says that AMD will launch its first Socket M2 processors already in April and the motherboard manufacturers are getting ready to support the new platform. The Socket M2 processors will support DDR2-SDRAM at speeds up to 667MHz with latencies at CL3, which is low for DDR2-SDRAM. The HTT frequency will also be boosted from today’s 200MHz to 333MHz. “The initial line-up of the Socket M2 includes Athlon 64 FX (Windsor), Athlon 64 X2 (Windsor), Athlon 64 (Orleans) as well as Sempron (Manila). Even the budget Sempron series will support Dual Channel therefore Socket M2 will completely replace Socket 939 and Socket 754. Since AMD is still on 90nm process for the initial Socket M2 processors line-up, therefore it is unlikely that the clock speeds will exceed 3GHz and performance to be improved significantly. Intel will have a chance to overtake AMD in terms of performance when Conroe comes around in second half of this year.” It is going to be very interesting to see how Socket M2 performs compared to Socket 939 but also what price differences there will be between the platforms. then it remains to see what the final name will be or if Socket AM2 will stand put.
