Taiwanese optical media manufacturers turn to PMP

Small preview imagePMP, portable multimedia players, is a market expected to grow a lot the upcoming years and it mainly considered the natural successor to MP3 players. But now the video playback feature is the most important part. We’ve heard rumours of Apple’s new iPod video and seen pictures of Acer MP500, expected to arrive soon, and now DigiTimes writes that the Taiwanese optical media manufacturer Lead Data will enter the PMP market. Lead Data is also selling large quantities of digital photo frames, a sale it expects to increase during 2006. Earlier it had plans for sellling 500 000 units, but is now hoping to reach twice as much; 1 million.

At the same time it has decided to start massproducing PMP units and hope to sell 20 000-30 000 PMP units a month to American retailers.

“The Suzhou subsidiary will start volume production of PMPs this month and then home security monitoring systems and wireless audio/video devices in the second half of this year, Lin indicated. Lead Data expects to ship 20,000-30,000 PMPs a month initially to American retail channels mainly at OEM prices of US$90-95, with a target volume of 200,000 units for this year, Lin said.”

Alas, we don’t have any specifications for Lead Data’s PMP models, but are truly looking forward to hearing more about these later on. At the same time it is fun to see more manufacturers entering the PMP market.
