Playstation 3 may not be as mystique as Nintendo’s Revolution, but there is still a lot of things that remain fuzzy and the least to say uncertain about the console. Just the fact that we don’t have a (believeable) launch date yet pretty much says it all. Sony is still standing firm on launching the console this spring, in Japan of course, but it’s hard for the common man to imagine anything even remotely similar to that as spring is getting painfully close and we still lack a lot of the facts.
1up decided to summarize what we know so far, it turned out not many specific things, and at the same time show the foundations of all the rumours going around. What we do know is that Cell will be the core, NVIDIA’s RSX will supply the graphics, Blu-ray the media, Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth and 1Gbit Ethernet to communicate and support for 1080p via two HDMI outputs and Dolby 5.1, DTS and LPCM (uncompressed audio) support.
Then we have the renowned controller that is a big step away from the old, establish dual shock controller, a controller many has gotten attached to and really like. Unfortunately there is no backwards support for the controllers, but you can always hope that some third party manufacturer develops new controllers with the old design, I.e. if you don’t happen to get along with the new one.
Although in the end, just as with the earlier consoles, there is a broad support among the developers, despite all the whining about the complexity. There are tons of games announced, where we have earleir posted screenshots from Vision Gran Turismo, that looked almost breathtaking.
The performance of Playstation 3 is something I could write pages about, but I will just say that there is a lot of potential , it’s just up to the developers to make use of it.
