Intel wants a part of the cake better known as the next generation digital interface for computers. VGA will be terminated like all other analog formats and DVI will be replaced as no one wants to handle the clumpsy connectors and the interface’s has poor support from the industry. HDMI is already on the verge of being accepted for computers and has already been introduced for the home electronics a long time ago, but Intel feels that HDMI is not the way to go. Officially it feels that the format is unnecessary as very few wants to use the same cable for both video and audio and instead that its UDI interface is a better choice, Unified Display Interface. UDI is simply HDMI without sound support and its own interface would save Intel more than a buck or two on licensing costs, something that never hurts.
Whether Intel’s UDI interface will manage to get a foothold on the market remains to be seen, but we are certain it will do whatever it takes to make sure that happends. With full support for HDCP and compatibility with HDMI there isn’t much for us consumers to comlain about either, but overall HDMI sounds like a better solution.
