Small preview imageThe amount of memory in a computer and its effect on the systems performance is something that has been heavily debated for many years and lately this has also become a big factor for modern video cards. Today the meanest cards comes with 512MB of graphics memory, but the question is if there is anything to gain from moving from 256MB up to 512MB? At PureOverclock they’ve published an article on this very topic and they have tested two GeForce 7800 GT cards; one with 256MB and one with 512MB. Otherwise they have the exact same frequencies and perform under the exact same circumstances with various 3D games, but they’ve also surveyed the video cards’ and system’s general memory usage. The numbers and results published are very interesting and sometimes surprisingly large.

The really big differences doesn’t occur until the performance is very low and hardly playable, but with some games 512MB memory seems to be a great advantage, even at lower framerates. Some very interesting reading for those who are looking for a new video card.
