Playstation 3 is a truly anticipated video game console and competitor for the Xbox 360. The performance seems to be more than enough to compete with Microsoft’s game console, but the PS3 has an Achilles’ heal as it will not arrive until about a year after Xbox 360. Sony has namely revealed that the console will be launched al over the world in November at today’s Sony event. During the event it also revealed several other very interesting facts that we have been wondering about, e.g. the hardrive and especially the online service.

As stateed Sony aims to launch the console worldwide and before the end of the year it will have shipped over 6 million units, considerably more than Microsoft was hoping to ship during its first 7 months. The delay is mainly suppose to be because of the Blu-ray copy protection, which has not been finalized. And considering all games will be released on Blu-ray media it is understandable.

The hardrive will be at 60GB and comes with a pre-installed Linux OS. This is due to the fact that developers have been working under the circumstance that the PS3 will have a harddrive. The harddrive will also be upgradeable to larger sizes.

As we earlier knew PS3 will be shipped with dual HDMI ports and Sony has chosen to go all the way withg the interface and offer true support for most possible future upgrades: e.g. support for up to 48bit colors and the coming sound formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

Playstation 3 will also sport a free basic online service where you can do pretty much the same things you can with Xbox Live!. An interesting statement Kutaragi did was that Sony PS3 is “live” and therefore capable of 4D gaming, the fourth dimension being time. Most likely a statement about the PS3’s online capabilities.
